The sword and sheath was a popular motif during the Victorian era when the sport of fencing and the chivalry of dueling was still admired. This late 1800s theme carries over to this antique stickpin or jabot pin.
The miniature sword in its coiled wire sheath is made of sterling silver with gold vermeil. They're attached via a gold-plated silver safety chain that also holds a small gilded silver locket.
This pin could be worn in many ways...on a lapel, a hat, across a collar, tie, or scarf. The sword goes through the fabric and is secured at the exposed end by the sheath.
The sword measures 3 inches long by 1 5/8 inches across. The locket measures 7/16 inch across by 5/8 inch high. Both sides of it are etched with a floral design. The book-like locket opens and has two 'windows' for photos with a partition in between. This locket partition is marked STERLING. The sword/sheath has been acid-tested for sterling. The pin weighs 6 grams.
We've left the original Victorian patina to polish or not. To whoever recognizes the unique artistry of this pin, we say 'Touché!'.
