This antique Victorian locket / necklace / watch chain is a jewel of many layers. It's an estate piece original, a long-held family heirloom that ran out of family.
The chain is exceptional with its ornate links comprised of a brass base and overlays of 9 ct. gold and 800 to 900 silver decorations that are hand-etched. The chain measures 20 inches long by 3/8 inches wide.
The delightful locket appears to be original to the chain as both feature tri-color metals and the same attention to intricate details and quality. The locket has a gilded silver base. The front of the locket has a ring of 9 ct. yellow gold, layers of silver leaves and a center flower of gold and silver.
The locket measures 7/8 by 1 3/8 inches (including loop at top). Inside, there are two 'windows' with photos of the original owners. She obviously had excellent taste in jewelry as she's wearing a fine brooch at her collar and long Victorian earrings that were all the rage back then.
The chain closes with a large 9 ct. spring ring clasp. It may be a replacement from many years ago or the original...we're not sure on that.
The chain and locket together weigh an impressive 53.2 grams. We've given this a light wipe but have not attempted to polish or clean it as the original patina is so lovely as it is. The most tarnish is around the edge of the photos which can be polished but we leave it to buyer to decide. The locket closes securely on a good hinge. This fantastic necklace is in excellent antique condition. Circa 1880s.
