The history of this Mark Mercy necklace and earrings set is almost as complex as the workmanship of these pieces. It began with Stanley Hagler as a one-man operation in the back room of his friend's antique shop and continued as that till his move to South Florida in 1983, where it became "Stanley Hagler N.Y.C.". Mark Mercy joined Hagler in 1979 and when Hagler died in 1996, Mercy continued to design jewelry. He also founded M & M Designs Florida, creating custom pieces.
This set reflects the success of the Hagler name. The necklace and earrings are opulent, hand-wired, jeweled with crystal rhinestones, faux seed pearls and metal beads. Each piece has a pearlized cabochon as a focal point but it's the entirety of the design that dazzles.
The necklace measures 18 inches around. The centerpiece measures 2 1/2 by 2 1/8 inches. The floral overlays make the pendant almost 1 inch thick. The pearlized glass beads graduate up the strand from 11mm to 7mm. The closure is a pretty gold-tone fishhook clasp. The filigree back of the pendant is marked with the M&M DESIGNS FLA. oval cartouche.
The matching clip-back earrings measure 1 1/4 by 1 1/2 inches. One is marked with the M&M DESIGNS - FLA oval cartouche. The clips hold securely.
The only flaw we see is some wear to the large pearly cabs. This is minimal and can be touched up by a professional. We're told that pearl nail polish does it but we leave that to buyer's discretion. Overall, this set is in excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. There are no missing beads or crystals.
Hagler jewelry like this is identified by the layers of elaborately detailed hand work, colored seed beads and seed pearls, Russian gold-plated filigree, along with Swarovski rhinestones, colored stones, crystal pearls, and unique designs.
The jewelry that Hagler and Mercy produced is comparative to Haskell, Boucher, Christian Dior, Schiaparelli, and Chanel. Through the years, the Stanley Hagler Company produced jewelry pieces for Lord & Taylor, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks 5th Avenue.
The jewelry name Stanley Hagler N.Y.C. and M & M Designs Fla. are well known throughout the finest stores and boutiques in the U.S. and other countries including Japan, England, Germany, France, Australia and Switzerland. Their designed pieces have been worn by the Duchess of Windsor (Mrs. Simpson), Ivana Trump, Barbara Walters, Madeleine Albright, Susan Lucci, Candice Bergen to name a few with jewelry designs seen in TV shows, and movies.
