It's a piece of art. It's museum quality jewelry. This old Byzantine inspired necklace is one to take your breath away. Only the most talented expert silversmith would attempt such an intricate piece.
Made of 925 solid sterling silver, the necklace is a multi-chain Byzantine style with enameled, deeply-etched medallions with a vermeil wash.
The necklace measures 17 inches around. It's 3/4 inch wide. Each of the individual medallions are attached via 11 herringbone chains. Five medallions in a row become the center focal point. The detailed medallions are enameled in shades of blue and green and have raised silver bead accents. The back of each link is marked 925 for sterling silver. The center link is also marked ANATOLI. The necklace weighs a very substantial 146 grams...over 5 ounces.
The elaborate clasp is beautiful all by itself with more artistic enamel work. It has a pull-out pin that releases the other end but the pin doesn't come all the way out so you can't lose it. A clever design feature.
Overall, this estate necklace is in excellent vintage condition with no notable flaws. We didn't polish it at all, leaving the original patina as found...perfect as it is. As best as we could determine, this was made circa mid-century. Where? Some place exotic where old craftsmanship still mattered.
