Dey Brothers Department Store was founded in 1877. It was the high-end department store in Syracuse, N.Y. After 50 years, circa 1927, the company celebrated with this GOLDEN JUBILEE DEY BROTHERS copper-on-bronze tone medal.
The medal hangs from a satin ribbon with a secure ~C~ pin closure. These special medals were probably worn by employees and/or given to customers as a promotional gift.
The medal measures just over 1 inch across by 2 5/8 inches long with the ribbon. The back is marked by the maker...The Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, N.J.
The medal is in excellent vintage condition. It's a nice original piece of Syracuse department store history. As customers left the store, did they hear...'We hope you had a good Dey'.
(Epilogue - Dey merged with its competitor the Addis Company in the late 1980s. It then merged with Sage-Allen, another small department store chain out of Connecticut. This store closed in 1992 and the entire chain ceased operation in 1994.)
