Have you ever seen anything like this? Neither have we. It's just the most unusual old peacock pin, handwrought of sterling silver with a huge chunk of natural Baltic amber as the tail. And this is the tale of the tail...
To state the obvious, the amber tail is filled with internal crackles. The outside is smooth to the touch except at the very end of the tail which shows slight chips and irregularity. Truth be told, we have no idea how long this tail will stay a tail...it can fall apart tomorrow or remain intact for another 1000 years. But we think this is such a beautiful and unique piece, it's worth the risk.
The body of the peacock is made of hand-layered sterling silver feathers. It makes a 'cup' for the large chunk of amber. The pin measures 3 inches across by 2 3/4 inches high. The amber alone is about 40mm by 40mm and about 18mm thick. The back has an unusual closure...a little lever at the side lifts up to open and release the pin. It's very secure. There are no markings on the back but this has been acid-tested for sterling.
We've priced this rare pin considering the condition of it. The amber tail is what really makes this pin so unique. But should the tail 'fail' at some future point, the nugget can be replaced with more amber...or turquoise...or any stone you like.
