Old and amazing, these jumbo-sized amber Bakelite Faturan prayer beads originated in the Middle East, likely Turkey, pre-1940s.
There are 13 barrel shaped beads and the end Imame bead. These beads test strongly for Bakelite (with 409 and Simichrome). It's believed that some bead makers would use genuine amber shavings to mix with the Bakelite though there's no way to confirm that with these beads.
Each bead measures about 27mm long by 24mm wide. The Imame bead is 43mm long. It has some brown silk tassel at the end.
The beads weigh 220 grams. About six of the beads have hairline cracks in them. These can't be felt with the fingers as all the beads are smooth to the touch all around. They seem solid and intact and should last another 100 years. The Bakelite is a very rich amber color with varied marbling. Metal melon ball bead spacers are in between the Bakelite.
The condition of the beads is appropriate to use and age and we've priced them accordingly. Overall, these are rare in both size and color.
