Bakelite was only part of the fun jewelry doings during the 1930s / 1940s. There was also this necklace, made of hand-painted wood circles, dangling from a red celluloid chain.
The circles are paired, squiggle-painted red on black, and chained via red celluloid rings. The overall effect is fun playful chaos and the look is chunky and ready-for-the-conga-line fabulous.
The necklace measures 16 inches around by 1 5/8 inches wide. The necklace has its original celluloid hook that goes over the silver-tone ring. It's all in excellent, all original condition. Circa 1940.
