It doesn't get more exotic than Madagascar, an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Southeast Africa. There, the Zebu is commonly raised for food and its beautiful horn is heated, shaped and carved into unique jewelry and home accessories.
This vintage necklace features a band of Zebu horn holding a large carved horn leaf. The leaf measures 3 3/8 by 4 1/2 inches. It's 1/8 inch thick.
The band measures 14.5 inches end-to-end with another 2 3/8 inches at the opening. It's 1/2 inch wide. It fits very comfortably on an average neck and it's light in weight.
Depending on the light, Zebu horn shows translucence and color shifts which makes it all the more interesting. It has the qualities of old tortoise shell but Zebu is not an endangered species. This necklace is uniquely dramatic and in excellent vintage condition. Circa 1970s.
