Dangling bells and amulets have always been a source of comfort and protection in Chinese culture. So when a baby was born, the family would present it with a bracelet with dangles to frighten away evil spirits.
This silver bracelet is circa 1900. The handwrought silver wire bracelet holds two charms...one a little 'seed of life' bell, the other a figural pig. The bracelet was made so that it could be expanded as a child got older. This one, as shown in photos, will fit an average female wrist or can be adjusted to fit a younger person. It measures about 2 3/8 inches across the opening each way as shown.
The charms measure about 7/8 inch. All the components test for high grade silver...probably sterling. The bracelet weighs 16.5 grams. It has an old Chinese hallmark. It's in excellent condition.
The Chinese word for bell is 'hitting the mark'. This lovely old piece does just that.
