We often hear people say 'This was my grandmother's' and we can never be sure if it was, but in the case of this beautiful Victorian piece...it really was Grandma's. Our friend was very reluctant to part with it but acknowledged that it just wouldn't look good on his Hawaiian shirts so he sold it to us. We promised we'd find it a good home.
What a lovely piece it is! It's a pin with a locket, circa 1890s. The gold-filled pin top was made by R.F. Simmons Company, known for their chatelaine and watch pins. This one has Art Nouveau curves in a bright gold color. Hanging below, is a gold-plated two-sided locket...one side with a carved Tiger Eye cameo and the reverse set with black jet or onyx. There's ornate scrollwork around the locket.
The entire pin measures 1 inch across by 2 inches high. The locket alone is 3/4 by 1 inch by 1/2 inch thick. The inside of the early rollover clasp is marked R.F.S. & Co.
The hinged locket closes securely. The only flaws are light age-related wear to the goldplate which is over brass so you don't see it without a magnifier, and there are some tiny fleabites to the edge of the jet or onyx...also not noticed without magnification. We haven't polished it as some prefer the aged patina.
Overall, this is a great early locket pin in fine condition. It would look good on anything...except maybe a Hawaiian shirt.
