When it comes to rare signed pieces, this rose pin is an open and shut case of intricate mechanical jewelry. Made by Joseph Warner circa 1960, this book piece pin actually opens and closes. The petals mimic the 'day and night' effect and it's quite fantastic to see it open up with the swivel of a petal.
This rose pin is featured in Judith Miller's 'Costume Jewelry' reference book and has a book value of $130-$160.
The rose pin comes with the hard-to-find matching rose clipback earrings. These do not have the open/close feature and are in the open position. The pin and earrings are heavily gilded with a natural realistic textured patina.
The center petals open and close when you slide the leaf on the right. The other leaf and a stem are fixed and there's a little rosebud in the center.
The rose brooch measures 1 7/8 inches across by 2 1/2 inches high. The matching earrings are 1 inch each way. All the pieces are marked WARNER in an oval plaque. The pin has a secure rollover clasp and the earring clasps are secure.
The set is in excellent condition. It's rare to find this book piece at all and finding it with its matching earrings is really a treat for the collector of good signed costume jewelry.
