This gold on sterling silver huaca pendant is a rare piece, reproduced from an original museum piece in South America, circa 1970. Our friend was a jewelry designer who traveled throughout South America to look for unusual pieces to incorporate into her work. She was given the privilege of having some iconic Pre-Columbian gold antiquities duplicated in silver.

The original huacas (pronounced waka) were found in Peru where they were made mostly of solid gold. The Indian artists who made them didn't think of these precious metals as riches but as sacred objects of divine origin. Gold symbolized the sweat of the sun. Silver was the teardrop of the moon.

This sterling silver huaca pendant has a 24K gold wash over the silver. It measures 2 1/4 by 1 1/2 inches. There's an embossed design running down the center.

The necklace measures 19 inches. It's beaded with some of the best quality genuine turquoise stone beads. The stones are in abstract shapes, cut and polished to display the natural matrix of the turquoise. Between the turquoise beads are gilded silver tubes and tiny crystal spacers. The tubes show a symbolic engraved design.
The hook and eye clasp is also shaped in keeping with the huaca tradition. Necklace weighs 74.4 grams.

Necklace is in excellent vintage condition. It's one of a kind. It's a unique and beautiful kind.
