WITH IT OR UPON IT...that's the quote on this antique 1800s silver medal. It's also the message attributed to Spartan women when their men went off to war. This ancient Greek saying implied that the soldier must come home carrying the honor of his sword and shield or die in the effort. Quite dramatic but then, the Greeks created Drama.
This medal is made of sterling silver, circa mid to late 1800s. It's beautifully made with great detail. The top features the sword and shield with a cross on it. It says O.S. which we believe stands for Order of Sparta. Below that hangs a piece with crossed swords with a crown and the letters P.R. Since we haven't been able to find another of these, we're not sure what that represents.
The badge measures 2 inches across by 2 3/4 inches long. The back has the original sturdy ~C~ clasp. There are no markings on the back but this tests for sterling silver. It weighs 19.8 grams. It's in excellent condition. A unique piece...a rare piece.
