Here's the story of Allan Williams and the Beatles...(as best as we could research it)

Allan Williams was a Liverpool businessman / entrepreneur. In 1960, Williams arranged for a fledgling Liverpool group call the Beatles, to undertake a residency at a club in the red light district of Hamburg Germany. It transformed the way they played and set them on a course that was to change popular music...and much more. Williams, later fell out with the band, leaving the field clear for the record store manager Brian Epstein to become their manager. Williams warned Epstein to have nothing to do with them. Williams became known as “the man who gave the Beatles away”.

The Liverpool club owner and impresario who, as the first manager of the Beatles, played a crucial role in the group’s transformation from a mediocre local dance band to the hard-rocking ensemble that mesmerized the world.

Mr. Williams’ main contribution to the Beatles development was arranging for them to become the house band at the Indra, a small club in Hamburg, Germany, in August 1960. It was a decisive turn in their career. At the Indra, and later at other Hamburg clubs — the Kaiserkeller, the Top Ten and the Star-Club — the Beatles played long hours that forced them to quickly expand their repertoire and hone their stagecraft.

Before Hamburg, the Beatles’ reputation among Liverpool musicians was so dismal that another band that Mr. Williams had sent to Hamburg begged him not to send the Beatles, on the grounds that they would ruin the reputation of Liverpool bands. When they returned after 14 weeks in Hamburg, their playing was so tight and hard-edge that listeners who had previously been dismissive were astonished.

(Meanwhile...back in New York City where we had our antique shop which specialized in Beatles memorabilia among a ton of other things, we did the first BeatleFest conventions which started in 1974.)
