Many Victorian pins were made in the style of mourning pins with black stone as the main feature on gold metal.
It was all in support of Queen Victoria who was the monarch of mourning after the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861.

She spent the next four decades in black dresses and jewels—lots of jewels. She had an obsession with jewelry (Prince Albert had also appreciated it) and she commissioned countless pieces to remember her dearly departed husband.

What started as 'mourning jewelry' became a fashion style. Women wore black by choice, not by grief, and they loved the look of black stone with genuine gold.

This antique pin is 14K yellow gold with the black onyx stone in the center and a seed pearl which was a symbol of tears. Just one tear here to remember the lost.

Pin measures 1 1/8 inches each way. It's marked 585 which is 14K gold. Has the original secure ~C~ clasp.

Pin weighs 4.8 grams. It's in excellent antique condition.
Queen Victoria's loss turned into a great discovery for so many of her supporters.
