This antique Victorian pin is hand carved of bone (NOT ivory). It says MADGE.
The name Madge means "pearl". It's a pearl of a girl's name that's also a nickname for Margaret or Margery.
(Trivia - When Madonna moved to London in the 1990s, the British tabloids referred to her as "Madge" which she found annoying until then husband Guy Ritchie said it stood for 'Your Majesty'.)
This pin came from an old Queens N.Y. jewelry store that had been in business since the late 1800s. We bought out their old stock in 1970 when they retired and we opened a shop in Greenwich Village. All the name pins were beautiful old names...some of which have made a comeback.
Pin measures 1 5/8 inches across by 1 1/4 inches high. The back has the original Victorian ~C~ clasp.
Madge is in excellent antique condition. Do you know a pearl-of-a-girl named Madge, Margaret, or Madonna?
