Old Mayan Mexican Necklace Sterling Silver Enamel on Copper Handwrought - image 1 of 7

I knew this was special when my eyes went wide, my heart skipped a beat and my brain did a happy dance. After seeing lots of vintage Mexican jewelry pieces over the years, this one had me at first sight.

This necklace is all handwrought folk art featuring a pendant that's green enamel on copper with a Mayan sterling silver face mask in the center. The waves around the edge are also sterling silver.

The pendant measures 2 1/2 by 3 inches...a palm full of great ethnic crafting with the Mayan face highly detailed in silver.

The pendant hangs from a sterling silver link chain that's also hand made. It measures 25 inches around. Even the large bail loop is hand-hammered.

The necklace weighs 42.6 grams. The only mark is 925 on the chain hook clasp.

One unique thing about this....the green enamel is made to look like verdigris (verdigris is a natural blue-green patina that forms on copper-containing metals). On the back, you can see some wear to the green at top and bottom. On the front, there are some enamel wear spots too but somehow, they blend in well enough to look intentional.

Patina is unpolished. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1950 or even earlier. A rare piece.
