We'll try not to get sappy about this old Czech glass pin but in fact, she's kind of the summation of our 52 years in the vintage business. One of the first things we did when we opened our Greenwich Village shop in December 1969 was to buy out an old jewelry store in Queens N.Y. The couple had been there for 40 years and had taken over the store from the previous couple who had been there throughout the late Victorian era to 1930. The back room of the store was full of dusty old boxes. We knew very little about jewelry back then but we needed merchandise for our new shop so we took all the dusty old boxes to Greenwich Village and stuck them in our back room. One of the boxes contained this pin, along with several different versions of it. The shapes of the black glass differed and the lady in the center looked in various directions. Over the decades, we sold them all to enthusiastic collectors who knew a lot more than we did. They knew a good old Czech glass pin when they found it. That was the end of the Czech lady...or so we thought.
This pin ended up in an old display box from the store days. Finding it was like bumping into an old friend you haven't seen in years. It was a nostalgic moment.
She's beveled in jet black glass. Her portrait is a paper print with a gilded rim. The back ~C~ clasp is fastened over the print.
Measures 1 1/4 inches across by 1 1/2 inches high. All original. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1920.
And we're still learning about jewelry every day.
