A little teamwork makes for a fantastic necklace. This one is made of old original hard celluloid charms that were made in Occupied Japan (1946 to 1949). The charms are hand-painted and they're cute as can be. They hang from a vintage yellow plastic chain with a spring ring closure.
The charms include football and baseball players...batter, pitcher, catcher. There's a baseball glove and baseball, and of course, a couple of game staples...hot dog charms (from the 1950s). There's also a 1940s Yale bulldog charm and a Navy goat. These were actual late 1930s mascot charms for the teams.
The necklace measures 20 inches around. The charms measures up to 2 1/2 inches high. Most are marked JAPAN on the back but they came out of little bags marked 'Made in Occupied Japan' (see photo). Necklace is in excellent vintage condition.
(Our sports charm necklace was featured in a 1970s Playgirl magazine and Andy Warhol, a good customer of ours back in our Greenwich Village store days, bought one for Bianca Jagger. That's the much younger me with Andy wearing a 'team' necklace.)
