This Victorian jet black pin was part of the trend of wearing black as both mourning jewelry and fashionability. From about 1860 to 1890, Queen Victoria who mourned her husband for decades, made black a statement of both loss and fashion style.
This pin is unique for its shape and size. It has 'wings' at the sides and a carved glass beautiful young girl as the cameo.
From the front, this looks like Whitby jet. The intense black and the high gloss stands out as Whitby. But the back is made in the Czech Victorian style with the metallic back covering the glass/jet and the original ~C~ clasp closure. So we're not sure if it's Whitby or Czech. Or maybe a combination. The result is exceptional, whichever it is.
Pin measures 1 7/8 by 2 inches. Excellent antique condition.
