We've sold a good number of Mimi di N belt buckles over the decades but this one definitely takes the prize. It's the biggest, most awesome, most impressive, most substantial Mimi buckle we've ever had. It's a group of star fish like you've never seen.
This buckle is rare (could not find another like it on the net), made in 1989. The two-piece buckle measures 6 1/4 inches across by 4 inches high. It weighs 194 grams.
The silvertone metal star fish are detailed with textured dots and veins. They have a pebbled background surface.
The back has two bars for the leather (or fabric) belt which take a width of 1 3/4 inches wide. Marked MIMI DI N - 1989.
Buckle is in excellent vintage condition. We would be very tempted to hang this buckle from a strong link silvertone chain and turn it into an incredible pendant clasp necklace. If you've got the neck, this will get you the 'wows'.
About Mimi - The jewelry company, Princess Mimi di Niscemi, existed from 1960 to 1990. The Italian born designer went to America to study at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts. While attending school, she also worked in the evenings at jewelry houses for Elsa Schiaparelli and Arnold Scaasi.
Mimi also worked and collaborated with such Haute Couture houses as Robert DeMario (1959) and “Brania” (1960s).
After honing her talent in the best fashion houses, in 1960, Madame Mimi di Niscemi opened her own company in New York. Her large outrageous belt buckles became very popular. And this one illustrates why.
