This old ethnic necklace represents the convergence of what was once a market of world trade in pieces you could carry in your pocket. Beads, silver, glass, carved bone, a trinket box. These things were a form of wealth, traded among peoples of different cultures who valued beautiful things, especially when they were hand made and unique.

This massive necklace features a silver box in the center. It's highly engraved with Arab / Islamic designs. It may be Persian or Turkish. The box measures 2 1/4 inches each way. It's 1 1/8 inches thick and made to hold pills, prayers, anything that fits. It opens up with a secure lid that still has its little hook clasp. It's been acid-tested for sterling silver.

The box may be the focal point but the interesting oversized beads vie for the eye. There are Venetian glass tabular and long Millefiore African trade beads. There are four large Faturan Bakelite resin beads (they test for Bakelite). These beads were first made in the early 1900s in Germany. Circa 1910, Turkish carvers found that this type of resin was easily carved and a perfect substitute for amber which was in high demand for prayer beads. Turkish Faturan beads became a valued 'jewel'.

Along the necklace are large carved bone beads (NOT ivory), hand-hammered antique silver melon beads, Italian pottery beads, brown jasper beads and near the ends, shell or stone heishi like beads.

The necklace measures 26 inches around. The little spring ring clasp is definitely out of place and should be replaced with something sturdier...we can do that if you like.

As for condition, this is very good overall. Because of the age and handmade nuances of these various components, there are imperfections. We'd be worried if there weren't any because this necklace has been around the world and has developed its patina over decades.

This necklace comes from an extensive advanced collection of ethnic tribal jewelry and we were lucky to get one of the best pieces.
