This is an amazing old handwrought Tribal bracelet. When placed in your hand, it will startle you because of the weight...145.5 grams. And it's all solid sterling silver (acid-tested).
The ethnic tribes who made this kind of jewelry were often nomadic, moving from place to place for various reasons. They couldn't schlep their silver / gold coins through the deserts without fear of being robbed. But yet, it was customary for women to wear jewelry and often, the valuable coins were melted down to make the jewelry. So the women were both well jeweled and also the bankers of the family wealth.
We can't pin down the exact origin of this bracelet...there are many possibilities. The workmanship is incredible, showing patience and precision. Rows of raised silver beads alternate with rows of silver bands.
The bracelet measures 6 1/4 inches around the inside. It's 1 1/2 inches wide. The 'top' of the bracelet has to be either the clasp or the hinge side up. On a small wrist (5 to 5 1/2 inches), it might turn to the decorative sides but on my 6 1/4 inch wrist, it won't fit that way. Nomadic women were obviously smaller but must have been strong to wear the jewels.
The bracelet opens on a hinge with a secure pin that goes through but doesn't pull all the way out so you can't lose it. Because this was hand made, there's some play in the both the hinge and the clasp but neither of them are going anywhere or in danger of losing functionality. This bracelet is somewhere close to 75 to 100 years old and we expect it should last at least that much longer.
We don't polish old silver patina...especially when it looks this beautiful.
