Back in 1970, we started collecting Bakelite and carved wood jewelry. They kind of went together because both became popular during the late 1930s through the 1940s when many jewelry materials became unavailable as they were needed for the war effort and jewelry makers discovered alternatives like plastics and wood. The unleashed creativity was a welcome delight. Jewelry was finally fun to wear.
This hand carved wood set is a great example from the 1940s. The ethnic Black Americana faces are carved and hand-painted with red lips. They have a primitive, folk art quality.
The man face pin measures 1 3/4 inches across by 2 1/2 inches high with original ~C~ clasp on the back. The round 'baby' clip back earrings are 1 inch across. Clips are secure.
Set is in excellent vintage condition. We're guessing that all that fun jewelry helped get the home front through a challenging time. It still has its magic charms.
