Hobe was founded in 1887 by Jacques Hobe, a goldsmith in Paris. His goal was to use fine jewelry techniques, but with non precious materials. When his son William came to the U.S. in the late 1920s, he started to make jewelry for New York Broadway producer Florence Ziegfeld. This jewelry, made to go with the extravagant Ziegfeld costumes, came to be known as 'costume jewelry'.
Fortunately, you don't need feathers and sequins to wear this Hobe vintage necklace. It's a showstopper all by itself.
Made of goldtone mesh, the wide textured chain lays like a collar around the neck. It has a gilded ribbon-like flourish at the center. The gold metal center is both smooth and satin-finished...a nice contrast together.
Necklace measures 17 inches around by 1 3/4 inches long at center. The decorative slide-in box clasp works securely. It's marked HOBE.
Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1960.
