Whether you spell it Hanukkah or Chanukah, this vintage dreidel or dreidl is the modernist version of the old Judaica spinning game toy. The common origin of the game is that it was played as Jews were hiding in caves from enemy soldiers. So that if they were found, they would be caught playing a simple game instead of studying the forbidden Torah.
This dreidel is made of solid copper with enameling on the inside. The edges are furled. The enamel is 'jeweled' with blue, turquoise and silver inlays and gilt Hebrew letters.
The dreidel measures 2 by 2 inches each way by 1 1/2 inches high. It weighs 48 grams. One-of-a-kind artist made.
Excellent vintage condition.
