This mid-century Mexican pin / pendant is a striking Aztec Mayan face mask handcrafted by Castelan.
This high level of multi-color enamel work has often been compared to that of Margot de Taxco (even by Bille Hougart in his book 'The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks') who states about Castelan...'very reminiscent of Margot'.
The is solid sterling silver with very fine enameling in blue, green, yellow and red. The open-work eyes and mouth and shape of the mask is cut out with precision.
The pin / pendant measures 1 7/8 inches across by 3 1/4 inches long with the silver dangles. (The one on the right has a tiny negligible bump to it.) The piece weighs 18 grams.
Back is hallmarked CASTELAN - 925 MEX STERLING with the Eagle 15 stamp. There's both an attached bail for a chain and a secure rollover clasp.
Excellent vintage condition with enamel bright and intact.
