We've had this since we first started collecting Bakelite in 1970. This came from a Bakelite company that made game pieces for casinos and board games. These beads are in the shape of dice and checkers because that's what they were intended to be.
When the company folded in the late 1960s, a friend of ours bought up a bunch of these parts and drilled them for making jewelry.
There are 56 pieces here...28 each of the cubes and the disks. They're strung on an elastic cord so this bounces and stretches from its starting size of 24 inches around. The red and yellow dice cubes measure 5/8 inch each way. The checker (or backgammon) disks are translucent olive drab green and measure 1 1/8 inches.
This weighs 260 grams (9.17 ounces)...lots of Bakelite to play with. Whether you throw it around your neck as it is, restring it, use the parts, or hang it on the wall and admire it for the next 50 years like we did, you'll love looking at it. Genuine tried and true old Bakelite.
