One of Helena Rubinstein's memorable sayings was: "There are no ugly women, only lazy ones."
Rubinstein (1872 - 1965) was anything but lazy. She built an enormous beauty empire, starting with beauty cream made from sheep's secreted wool wax, chemically known as lanolin. (No wonder sheep look so young.)
She dabbled in many interests as a businesswoman, philanthropist, art collector, cosmetician. Of course, she understood that beauty extended to the jewelry you wear. One look at her and you knew that she had a penchant for ornamentation that went beyond the skin.
This 1980s necklace was inspired by the bold style of Rubinstein. It's marked HR PARIS.
The heavy goldtone metal is linked into a flexible weave. The centerpiece is a mesmerizing huge Swarovski crystal. The sides are enameled in forest green.
Necklace measures 16 1/2 inches around, ending in a secure slide-in box clasp. The center is 1 1/2 inches wide. Necklace weighs 162 grams.
Excellent vintage condition. A powerhouse of a necklace...impressive and admirable...just like its creative inspiration. Wear this necklace and you don't need lanolin.
