Back in the Victorian era, people didn't have much in the way of fighting a small home fire. This rare glass grenade style fire extinguisher was about the best protection you could get while you waited for the horse pump truck to come.
The odd-shaped bulb is a white milk / iridescent glass 'bomb' that is (still) filled with an unknown liquid that presumably puts out a fire. These types of fire extinguishers were made and used between 1870 and 1910. They would be stored on metal brackets on the wall. This one is a SOMOL with original label and comes in its original bracket.
Glass is embossed...THE SOMOL CO. LTD. - BOSTON MASS. The metal bracket says...FOR YOUR SAFETY, etc.
The glass with bracket measures about 6 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches high. The glass swings in the bracket and was made to pull out and throw when necessary. Now, consider it a collector's item for display only. Circa 1900.
