This is a necklace you give to someone you like a lot...yourself included.
It came from the store Fortunoff which opened in Brooklyn in 1922. At one time, they had many stores in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island but the stores dissolved and the name is now mostly attached to stores that sell outdoor furniture and Brooklynites reminiscing over cocktails about the good old Fortunoff days.
Fortunoff Jewelry was introduced in the 1950s. Lauren Bacall did advertising for the jewelry. The company opened a specialty jewelry store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan in the 1970s. This necklace still has its FORTUNOFF tag with a style number that now appears to be defunct.
The necklace is fine, unique and totally gorgeous. Three strands of small polished genuine amethyst beads are spaced with clear crystal and pale yellow beads...citrine, maybe. The little yellow gold bead spacers are 14K as is the secure slide in melon ball clasp. It's marked 585 for 14K. Note that the clasp first HOOKS on to the bar on the ball side and then slides in to click into place.
The necklace measures 18 inches around. It's about 5/8 inch when the three strands are together. It weighs 35 grams. The stones are perfectly matched for color and size. The quality of the work is top notch. Many of the jewelry items were made in Italy, specially for Fortunoff. This is a real find. The Brooklynites (me included) have something exciting here to rave about.
Excellent unworn condition.
