It's a masterpiece! Well, maybe not the kind we see in major museums but certainly a masterpiece of charm and warmth. This vintage oil painting on wood or masonite board is true folk art, painted by artist Gladys Raplee.
Gladys B. Raplee (1917- 2007) was a gifted local artist, creating various art forms with a focus on tole work. She ran her own art business for many years In Elmira, New York. She was responsible for a number of commissions, both private and public. Her painting captures a moment that makes us, the viewers, feel good.
'The Flower Lady' (as it's noted on the back), is dressed in a dowdy print dress. Her triple bun white hair is neat under a squat little hat. She has a basket of flowers on her arm and is contemplating another flower in front of the 25c flower cart. It's just a beautiful moment captured, for all of us to share.
The actual painting measures 5 by 7 inches. The oak wood frame measures 6 5/8 by 8 5/8. There's a metal tab on the back for hanging. Painting is in excellent condition. Circa 1940s.
