Incredible detail went into this antique banko ware incense burner. Monkeys such as this one are usually seen in the evil monkey groups of three. I have never seen an incense burner like this one. It is absolutely magnificent standing at 5 1/2" high. Quite large for a banko piece. The clay based ceramic is finely detailed and accurately captures the monkeys personality. He is holding some type of fruit? which is highlighted in red enamel as is part of his face and eyes. He has holes in his ears and mouth which allow the smoke to escape. His body is hollow and hinged with a single wire attaching him to the base. Circa 1920 or earlier. Made in Japan. Beautiful vintage condition. He is FABULOUS and sure to thrill the collector of rare monkeys.
