Collectors wait a lifetime to find such treasure as this outfit by famous American fashion designer, Carolyn Schnurer. Carolyn Schnurer was best known for her innovations in beachware and sportswear, as well as adapting the two piece bathing suit for the American market. She was well travelled and gained great popularity through American Fabrics magazine who touted her use of ethnic fabrics in her designs. She was featured on the covers of many famous fashion magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Life. One of her designs is a prized possession in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her fashion designs are highly sought after and coveted among serious collectors of American fashion design. And now for the details on this set...You will love this beauty. This two piece ensemble was no doubt a result of Carolyn's trip to Africa. A trip to which American Fabrics magazine devoted their Winter 1952 issue. It features a strapless bandeau style dress in a bold geometric fabric with matching shawl/wrap. The fabric is cream, rust and dark brown featuring stylized butterflies and dragonflies amidst a myriad of florals in borders and bold diamond patterning. The shawl is quite innovative with cutouts for the arms allowing the wearer to wear it as a capelet type jacket or simply thrown over one shoulder. There is beautiful detail in the shimmering handknotted fringe in which the silken tri-color threads are an exact match to the colors in the fabric. This amazing piece of history is a true work of art. The size looks to be around a size 6-8, but please pay close attention to the actual measurements which are: 32"-33" bust, 27" waist and the length is 38" from the front top to the bottom edge of the hem. The shawl measures 78" in length including the fringe and is 32" wide. A breath taking piece of American fashion design at its finest and sure to be the piece de la resistance for the serious collector. This beauty is an absolute showstopper! Totally wearable and current with today's fashions. Looks like something right out of Hollywood. Condition is beautiful. The fabric looks like it has never been worn or washed. Absolutely pristine. I cannot emphasize how rare this set is.
