Singularly beautiful and seldom seen Italian marquetry tray with intricate intarsia marquetry inlay. This is an amazing feat of artistic talent to inlay all of these tiny bits of contrasting wood to form a lacy and profuse foliate design. The imagery is classical and fanciful with chimera including sweet birds and at its center is a cherub riding a chariot. The condition is quite good considering the age (there is an area on the backside where the veneer is lifting a bit but this doesn't affect the front side in any way. It measures 20" by 15" not including the handles. Most likely made in Sorrento, Italy during the 1930's-1940's. There is currently a wire on the reverse for hanging on a wall.
