Very special and rare pair of vintage Turkish Sultan and Sultana dolls. The lovely couple are seated on silk brocade pillows smoking hookahs. I have never seen another pair like these. The handsome man and beautiful woman look as they are out of a Valentino movie from the 1920's. The theme of exotic men and women smoking is reminiscent of what was popular during the Art Deco era, particularly in Hollywood films. The Harem clothing is intricate and well done with silks and various other materials realistically representing the Ottomon empire clothing. There are sequin and bead embellishments lending to their oppulence. The Sultan's conical hat has a feather and star on it. The hand painted faces are charming and have great detail. They are in excellent condition and would be wonderful displayed in a Turkish tea room or other exotic period interior displayed with oriental carpets or rugs. They are approximately 55 years old as there are labels on the bottoms indicating that they were made in Istanbul on March 25, 1960. They each measure 7" high. A handmade and delightful vintage treasure from Turkey.
