Nicely detailed Japanese Banko ware vase with deeply carved scene of Torri gateway leading to a Shinto shrine set in a forested mountain setting. The Torri gateway is significant in that it marks the transition between the profane and the sacred area contained within the shrine. This piece is beautifully rendered by hand. The relief and incised areas are left unglazed giving prominence to the subject matter. The body of the vase has a brown mottled glaze. The Measures 4 7/8" high. Very good condition. Marked Made in Japan on the bottom.
