German papier mache egg measures 8" tall and 5" wide. Germany is known for its wonderful papier mache holiday novelties. Their origins date to the 19Th century from Erzebirge, the same area were the iconic German toys originate. It is a tradition for the Oster Hase or Easter Bunny to fill these eggs with chocolates and candies. Eggs marked Germany were probably made between 1891 and 1918. Eggs after 1918 were marked Germany Republic. Those marked Made in Western Germany or Eastern Germany were made after War II. Some version of these eggs is still made today, and they are marked Germany or Made in Germany. They are beautifully made and a wonderful gift any time of year. Some families even hid Christmas gift inside them before hanging them on the Christmas tree. This example is done beautifull in gold patterned with red roses.
