20 inch German China head doll circa 1885. This child doll has short tousled hair with brush stroke details, and exposed ears. The large pale blue eyes with white highlight and mouth with darker center line, suggests ABG (Alt Beck & Gottschalck) as the maker. This doll is often found dressed as a boy, because the short hairstyle and molded side part. Many antique photographs of young girls with short hair suggest that their hair was kept short because of the prevalence of head lice, so dressing this doll as a girl is appropriate. The doll is beautifully dressed in an 1880's antique cotton dress with hand stitched details. She also has antique pantelettes and slip.
Light areas showing on the hair are reflections due to photography lighting. There is no paint loss or wear to the hair. The body is from the 1940's-1950's when ladies were making wonderful firmly stuffed bodies with china arms and legs. This is an appropriate style for the antique head.
