A fine, typically Scottish three-piece bachelor's tea set, highly embossed on a matted ground. Hallmarked Edinburgh 1871. Maker J.H. (for John Hay or Howden). Lid has a duty mark. "Mary" engraved on banner in vacant cartouche on each piece. Teapot is 7 ½ inches across spout and handle; circular body is 5 inches in diameter; height 4 ½ inches to tip of knop. Creamer is 3 inches across handle; body is 2 ½ inches in diameter; height 3 1/8 inches to top of handle. Sugar bowl is 4 inches in diameter across body; height 2 ½ inches. Weight 532 grams. Condition: excellent.
