A lovely, early George I Britannia silver caudle cup. Britannia silver contains a higher silver content than sterling. Hallmarked London 1722. Maker Humphrey Payne. The lower body is wrythen-lobed. The scrolled cartouche has a continuous gadrooned girdle below the rim; strawberry leaves above with shell crowning cartouche reserve. Hallmarked below the rim near handle (Grimwade #2118). The crests were engraved later. Cup is 3 1/3 inches high, 4 1/8 inches in diameter, and 6 ½ inches long over the handles. Weight 184 grams. Notwithstanding some thinning through the high points and a split on the bottom edge, it is rare and close to 300 years old. A beautiful piece of art crafted by a renowned silversmith.
