This beautiful pair of signed petal base candlesticks is the real thing, circa 1760. The candlesticks stand 7 ½ inches high and are signed with the initials "WA" and the number "3" on the underside of each base. Polished, they are a pale brass colour as if the brazier used a higher than usual zinc content in the making. There is old soldering inside bases to correct loose shafts which is common on candlesticks as old as these. There is a small split in each drip lip (see photos), and one base is slightly bent; but they stand straight. Only a handful of these candlesticks were signed, so this is a rare find indeed. Reference: Michaelis, Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlesticks, p. 115, Figure 169.
