A binnacle or ship's compass was made in the early 1900's, signed "Christie & Wilson, Glasgow," Scotland. The compass itself floats in all directions with a spring suspension and is alcohol filled and accurate.
The base is solid teak with old varnish in very good condition, all mounts are solid brass on this antique ship salvage. The compass floats inside a removable well worn brass hood. On both sides are iron "compensating" balls to adjust the compass. There are two oil lamps to illuminate this nautical instrument at night, one signed "Sherwoods" with curved glass and on signed "Murray of Glasgow."Measurements are 21" wide, 14" square at the base and 48" tall excluding the lamp handle.
