This richly hand carved dowry chest or blanket trunk is solid oak, inscribed "F. (Frau) Katrina Richters, Anno 1802." Hand hewn with original handwrought iron hardware, the lock does not work.
The old finish is remarkably well preserved, and has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the soft luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are shrinkage separations from age in the wide planks of oak.
This antique furniture from Germany would have held a young woman's dowry of linens, pewter and silver, and would have been moved to her new home at her marriage. These chests traditionally descended through daughters of a family.
Corners have hand cut dovetails, there are wooden pegs instead of nails.
Size is 51" wide, 26" deep and 30" tall.
