Here we have a Magnificent ELITE WORKS (Bawo & Dotter) Limoges NUDE Signed Portrait Vase. Before you even look at the Gorgeous PORTRAIT, take a gander at the mold -- It is HIGHLY UNUSUAL with a Tear Drop Shape atop a fanned out, and DIAMOND Patterned Gold Embellished Base...but, the HEAVILY GILDED ORNATE Handles and Small Diamond cut outs at the top of the vase are the real show stoppers. Check out the leaf embellishment at the base of the handles. Every detail is attended to in this mold. Further, THERE is almost NO gold loss on this century old beauty, and it has OBVIOUSLY been a VALUED China Cabinet display item.
Now, to the Lovely Nude Portrait which is BEAUTIFULLY Hand Painted. She is artistically Hand Painted in the Belle Epoque/Romanticism style..There are markers of this style in the color palette of pale blues and grays and the upward arching and curving LILIES that mimic the sweetly CURVED Body of our LOVELY NUDE WOMAN. One arm wraps around a lily to breath in the scent, while the other reaches to the sky wrapped in a swath of cloth. Her long hair falls to her waist, and we view her lovely face in profile. Her nudity is unconscious and naturalistic, and innocent in the presentation. The VERY TALENTED artist "M J Shaw" signed the bottom of the vase.
This Fabulous Vase is approximately 11 1/2 inches tall and approximately 8 inches across from handle to handle. As the pictures show, it is in PRISTINE condition. The mark is the ELITE WORKS (Bawo & Dotter) Limoges mark #5, underglaze white ware mark in green with "FRANCE", circa 1890 - 1932. This lovely young woman was OBVIOUSLY painted by a very proficient Artist...but one who did not sign his name (unfortunately). If you are looking for a complementary piece, see the ELITE works (Bawo & Dotter) Limoges vase I have under another listing :)
Marks: ELITE WORKS (Bawo & Dotter) Limoges , Mark #8, overglaze decorating mark in red with "Limoges" written in script, and "France" printed, circa 1891 - 1900. (see Mary Frank Gaston's EXCELLENT reference book, "Collectors's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3 rd. ed., page 33)
