This LARGE and HEAVY platter is MUSEUM QUALITY PAINTED! The pictures should speak for themselves..This work of ART belongs on the WALL not the Table...the Bantam Chickens are SO REALISTIC that you can almost hear them clucking, and (interestingly enough) the background is beautifully painted as well. Often, in animal plates, the background is rudimentarily painted; but in this plate, the farmhouse and cypress trees are lovely and evoke the south of France. The artist has prominently signed his name, "A. Theillaumas" near the bottom of this bucolic scene.
This OBLONG PLATTER measures 19 inches by approximately 12 1/2 inches. It curves from the base to almost 2 inches high at the handles.
The LIMOGES mark on the back is Jean Pouyat, Mark #5, underglaze white ware mark in green with "FRANCE", circa 1890 - 1932. On the back, there is a glaze slip, and a small PRE-GLAZE Defect. This type of anomaly is common with such LARGE pieces, and is the exception to my "no damage" rule...as it is not really damage, but existed with prior or at the time of glazing.
You will note that this plate has a HIGH price, but I assure you the art work demands it.
Size: 19 inches by approximately 12 1/2 inches. It curves from the base to almost 2 inches high at the handles.
Condition: EXCELLENT condition! At the handles, the gilt is almost 98% intact, with small areas of wear consistent with age. The back of the platter has a small glaze slip and indentation...please see pics and read WHOLE description. The art work is BRIGHT, SHINY, and IMMACULATE!
Marks: Jean Pouyat, Mark #5, underglaze white ware mark in green with "FRANCE", circa 1890 - 1932.
