This impressive vase stands 11 1/2" high and is about 7 1/2" across the widest area. It is hand painted in Pickard's rarely seen BORDURE ANTIQUE pattern and is signed HESS (Hessler, Robert). Hessler was associated with Pickard Studio in Chicago between 1898-1912.
The bright cobalt band and the black and white pattern create a stark contrast to the etched gold glaze. The white bird motif always reminded me of ancient hieroglyphics. This unmarked blank carries Pickard Studio decorating mark 5 (1905-1910).
The sad news is that there is a VERY tight hairline that runs for about 4" from the top of the blue band, down the side. It is barely visible from the exterior but can be seen more clearly on the white interior (see photos). None the less, this vase shows in excellent condition.
This is a wonderful opportunity to own a massive vase at a fraction of its value!
