Museum Quality cameo depicting Nyx, the Goddess of the Night. This is a cameo of surpassing beauty, carved by an artist. Every details is perfectly rendered making this cameo a real work of art. Really pictures don't give any justice to this cameo, you should see it in person, each detail is crisply carved as her dress, her wings. This cameo is after a marble work of Thorvaldsen made in 1815 and now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, see it below. This is another masterly carved cameo. A very desirable collectors piece, rare and museum quality cameo.

Date and Origin: Circa 1860 Italy.
Conditions: Some natural shell lines that you can see above Nyx only when cameo is backlit, gold is a bit tarnished on the right side of the frame, 3 gold circles decoration on the frame are partially missed.
A bit of History:
In Greek mythology, Nyx , (Nox in Roman translation) was the primordial goddess of the night. A shadowy figure, Night stood at or near the beginning of creation, and was the mother of personified such as Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death). Her appearances in mythology are sparse, but reveal her as a figure of exceptional power.
