Magnificent and large late Victorian helmet shell cameo brooch set in a wide gold mounting having a granular border. The grand processional scene is after Reni's fresco "Phoebus & the Hours Preceded by Aurora" of the Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi which was built by the Borghese family, circa 1613.
The sun god Apollo is ascending the heavens surrounded by his daughters, the horae or seasons. He is preceded by his sister Aurora, goddess of the dawn. Above is Genius of light, or the day star Lucifer holding his torch.
A Roman myth tells the story of Aurora who longed to be with her mortal lover for all eternity. Aurora asked Zeus to grant immortality to Tithonus a prince of Troy, and Zeus did grant her wish. Tragically, Aurora did not ask for eternal youth to accompany Tithonus immortality and he became forever old, after which she turned him into a grasshopper.
The oval brooch measures approximately 2.5 inches long x 2" wide. Gold tested to be at least 10k. Slight wear to high points, but no damage or cracks. Tube hinge with lever catch. Safety chain is without pin.
